There's been a lot of talk about the bonuses and the wage increases in the new UFCW 1059 contract, but there is something else that I find even more concerning. Under extenuating circumstances, a third party can be used to staff pickup departments. They offer examples of severe weather or extreme call offs. I fear that in the event of a strike, this clause will be used to hire temporary workers to staff pickup departments. This would greatly reduce the hardship of a strike on the company and severely weaken the bargaining position of an already weak union. What kind of union “fully recommends” a contract that allows scabs to keep the doors open during a strike?
