Unpaid internships but only for some professions

Can someone tell me why I had to work 6 months full time at two different placements but not only did I not get paid for it, I had to pay my college full tuition during that time too. No benefits. You could only take 3 days off if you really needed them. Any more than that and you failed and had to start over. You couldn't graduate without it. (Think health profession/counselor/teacher kind of job) Then my partner (in tech) , does multiple 4 week internships as part of his program and he gets paid an appropriate wage. Is it because my profession has more limited program options so they take advantage of the high demand for the degree from fewer institutions? Why do we even have unpaid internships? Why tf was I paying to work full time for half of a YEAR??? Edit: spelling and a few more…
