Using virtual machines instead of just VPN when working in a different country than one your employer thinks you are in

So I travel a lot. My remote jobs all think I am in the USA. I use VPN. Will using a virtual machine like AWS Workspaces be even better than just a VPN? Are virtual machines like Workspaces hard to set up? Additionally. I guess if I was found out to be in another country, some of the jobs could say it's like a security breach or some sh*t when they fire me / try to pursue legal action. So in regards to a virtual machine such as Workspaces, just wondering in general if they are viewed as having 'better security' than just a VPN? Thanks.
