I work as a delivery driver. We're compensated per mile based on our vehicle make and model, intending to compensate for the “actual cost” at work. I zero my odometer at the start of shift and put the number at the end into the checkout system. The other night driver, and one of the morning drivers, instead enter their mileage per delivery instead of just picking one delivery and raising or lowering that number to compensate by how far off the system's “estimate” is.
Here's a hint: The estimate is pretty fucking far off most nights. Anywhere from a mile or two over my actual milage to several miles under (the worst I've seen was a ten-plus-mile deficit).
However, today our store manager informed us that apparently the three of us are the only ones in the city actually doing this, and that her bosses were getting on her about this, threatening to fire her and her managers for allowing this. I was under the impression, from how she talked, that the night managers would have to put the mileage in for us but that we could continue on as normal. The night manager at the end of shift bluntly informed us that we will be taking the “estimate” mileage, and that increasing it to our actual miles driven is now against company policy.
I'll be going in to confirm this with the store manager tomorrow, and possibly resigning if this is the case and she isn't willing to go to bat for us. It's been a pretty good job up until this nonsense, regular raises, good tips, excellent work-life balance, PTO and healthcare, the works. I'm just not willing to put up with being shortchanged.
