Waited two hours for an interview so I left

Yesterday I went to an interview at a Skyzone (one of those trampoline park things). They seemed to be pretty urgently hiring as they had open interviews basically everyday and I was seeing ads everywhere for it. I had to fill out an online form first and was immediately met with a red flag. One of the required questions was “What will your mode of transportation be?” Now, while this isn’t asking someone directly if they have a car, unless they are looking for someone to park their car on a trampoline inside, I can’t see how this information would be relevant. I simply answered that I had reliable transportation. I then went to the location for the open interview. They seemed to be pretty urgently hiring as they had open interviews basically everyday and I was seeing ads everywhere for it. Now, while this isn’t asking someone directly if they have a car, unless they are looking for someone to park their car on a trampoline inside, I can’t see how this information would be relevant. I simply answered that I had reliable transportation.

I then went to the location for the open interview. One of the workers saw me walk in with my resume and they correctly assumed I was there to interview. They directed me to a small row of bleachers for parents to sit on while they watch their kids.

And then… I waited. The open interviews were said to be from 3:00 – 5:00 and I got there at 3:30. At 4:15 I finally got up and talked to the worker again. He seemed surprised I hadn’t been seen yet. He stepped into a back room, came out, and assured me they were almost coming. I took a seat and kept waiting.

Every 15 minutes an announcement came on telling kids that if they had a certain colored wrist band, their time was up. This was a great reminder to get up and talk to the worker again. At 4:30 I spoke to him a little longer, just double checking that I hadn’t missed someone as I was staring down at my phone mostly while waiting. He then told me that all the managers were having an important meeting and that he described my appearance to them so they wouldn’t miss me.

And then… I waited. I have no idea why managers would schedule an important meeting when they know that people will be coming in for the interview. They couldn’t schedule that meeting at 2:00? Or 5:00? I know that sometimes emergencies pop up, but the entire place felt rather calm. There was no sense of urgency or surprise from the workers, it felt like a run of the mill day as far as I was concerned.

I ended up waiting until 5:00 and then I got up to leave. I spoke to a different person at the front desk to let them know I was leaving. They also were surprised I was still there and asked me if I wanted her to go talk to her manager. I told her no, I had places to be.

The whole thing was just a huge waste of time. The bleacher had no back support and poor reception so I sat for 2 hours, back killing me in a loud environment just to be brushed aside.

They’re missing out too. I’m young but have 9 years of experience working with kids in an environment like that (I used to run a climbing tower at a summer camp through all of high school and college). I was also looking to work whatever hours they could give me as I’m saving up for my wedding in November. Oh well, it’s their loss. I’ll be sending them and corporate an email later today.

The job search continues!
