This is everywhere because I am emotional and pissed.
I am currently working in a pretty small kitchen, with mostly teenagers. When I was first hired I was told I was filling the sous position and that I would be getting a raise after a month once I can prove myself. Awesome! There was a miscommunication somewhere I guess and that title quickly disappeared and so now I am just “second in charge”. Whatever. Most of the older people who work in the kitchen work mornings doing prep besides for Friday-Sunday when we serve lunch. Of course, I work nights because I can work two to three stations at once. We just got done a $6k night. The start of my shift the first thing that happened was my “executive chef” pulled me into dry storage to tell me that there is a new sous chef. I, of course get excited to have that title. He proceeds to tell me that one of the prep cooks in the morning is getting the promotion, along with a pay raise. I was told that until we get our liquor license, there would be no raises, even after being promised one. My coworkers and I openly discuss our wages. I was hired on at a higher wage then them, due to experience and title. The only people that have experience in the kitchen are me and the executive chef. The only people who haven't gotten a raise are me, one of the prep cooks who are Mon-Fri, and the other prep cook who calls out 1-2 times a week.
I have been in this industry for 10 years. I went to school. I have worked almost everything. I have been in big kitchens, little kitchens, kitchens with a small team, kitchens with a big team. I have taught people. I have ran pastry. I have been working line/pastry for the past 7 years. I went to school. I have been around. They give this guy the position and the pay. I have been doing the “executive chefs” job since my first week there. I taught everyone how to make sure everything is done correctly. I am the one that implemented deep cleaning. I am the one who taught everyone how to temp the meats. (We are a burger place). I am the person that gets called to fill in shifts. I am the one that gets called when it gets too busy. There are 3 people on the AM shift and I have to work Sunday because they can't keep up with the lunch crowd, when me and two teenagers handle weekend nights no sweat.
I am pissed they gave this dude with barely any experience, doesn't even know was FIFO is, has to cut burgers open to see how done they are, probably can't tell me what mirepoix is, a second raise and a title before even considering the fact that I have been running their fucking kitchen for the past 6 months while their “executive chef” leans on the cooler and scrolls through tictok all fucking night.
I am feeling so.. worthless? Taken advantage of? Like. I am pissed. I sent a message to the owner about it and her response was “Currently at dinner with the girls I haven't seen in a while” Like, fuck me right? Am I wrong for being pissed? Like sorry I wasn't texting you every day saying that someone didn't wrap something or that there were fucking shoe prints on the floor after we mopped. She complained to me about how much he annoys her because he is constantly texting her about something being wrong. Sorry I'm not pushing you to buy shit we don't need when you are constantly crying about labor costs.
Am I wrong? I feel so drained and hurt. My SO basically just said to suck it up.
Tldr: no experience prep cook gets second raise and sous chef position after raise and title promised to me at hire
