We post a lot of wins, a lot of “wtf is wrong with this employer”, and a lot of good shit pushing for a better future. But for many people, the future is too far. They need a lifeline, and they need it now. This is a thread for people to share a side hustle, explain how to start, and how to succeed

I'll start so y'all know I'm not just fishing for a free instructional on something easy. Up until recently, I was working a fully WFH job that did not pay enough for me to support three people ($19/hr in Los Angeles). This is my first privilege, and I'm not afraid to admit it. Being able to WFH gave me the freedom and time to study something on my company's dime. I would wake up before work to study, study during downtime at work, and study after work until I went to bed. All in all, I was dumping something like 10 hours a day to make this shit work. I get that most people will not have this privilege. Does that mean this will not be helpful? Absolutely not. It means that you can achieve the same success, but it'll take longer. So why Copywriting? Copywriting is this weird thing…

  1. Copywriting is this weird thing that nobody knows about but everybody needs (demand)
  2. Copywriting doesn't require a degree or a certification or even a portfolio of past work (we'll get into this)
  3. You can do copywriting on your own time, at home, at a cafe, or at a friend's get together.

That sounds great, right? So what are the cons:

  1. Copywriting is unfortunately a target market for “Gurus” to shill courses for hundreds and thousands of dollars. (Spoiler, you don't need to buy a course to get started)
  2. Copywriting is often accompanied by “You can make 6 figures overnight” marketing. This is bullshit (the overnight part, not the 6 figures part)
  3. Copywriting is writing, but you don't have to be a good writer. You need to be a good empath.
  4. Copywriting, as with any skill, requires a lot of learning, dedication, and self-discipline

I recently quit my job to be a WFH, freelance copywriter and I am now making more than I was at my job. I purchased a bunch of courses because I 100% fell for the bullshit of the “6-figure overnight” promise. Don't be me. Be smarter. I'm going to be sharing my honest thoughts on how someone with ZERO understanding of what Copy is can learn for free and land their first client in their first 90 days (if you're diligent and are able to dump 10-20 hours a week into this. I understand that this is not feasible for many people)

Step 1: Don't buy a fucking course. Youtube and TikTok gurus who shill courses are a dime a dozen. What you need to do instead is go to https://www.reddit.com/r/copywriting/comments/lpuj9h/what_the_faq_what_is_copy_how_do_i_start_can_i_do/ and do some reading. If after reading this it sounds like something you want to try, join the community discord server at the bottom of this page

Step 2: Introduce yourself and go to #How-to-start-copywriting. This single channel will

  • Give you the run down on what this shit is
  • Teach you how to write in a persuasive manner (6 hour video)
  • Teach you how to study good copy and how to practice
  • Teach you how to create “Spec” pieces (Speculative pieces, aka 'for fun' pieces that you can show clients)
  • Teach you how to build your portfolio with spec pieces
  • Teach you how to start prospecting for clients

And that's it. Two not-so-easy steps to get started. It doesn't seem like much at first, but there's more than 20 hours worth of material in this one channel. So get cracking and most importantly

Get. Some. Bags. Quit your job, be your own boss, and THRIVE.
