What are your feelings on defending yourself to your managers, or any authority at work?

I am in the service industry. Yesterday I was working a double, and at 4pm all the night servers came in, 6 total. I had one table, and I haven't been sat in an hour, and the store was dead. Naturally, I go up to my boss and ask to be cut early, because I have been there since 10 AM. My boss replied, “I will try, but the next time you ask it's going to add ten minutes to you not being cut.” Something turned in me and I was like, “Michelle, respectfully, please don't talk to me like a child, that is something I would say to a kid.” And walked away. Ten minutes later, she said I was cut. I know it comes off as super disrespectful and out of line, but I don't make anything hourly, so it was a massive waste of time to be there. I worked from 10AM-7PM and left with $60. I am grateful got the cash I did leave with, but if I didn't leave I would have taken tables from other servers. I believe it's okay to defend yourself to work authority, within reason. I watch my fiancee bend over backwards for his boss and managers, and he would never talk the way I did to my manager, and yet he works 10 hour days everyday. I am trying to learn more about boundaries in the workplace, because I used to let managers borderline abuse me at other jobs. However, in the process, I just am getting upset with authority at the workplace.
