what our time is worth

step one: i apply for a job step two: during the interview i’m told that the hours are 7:30-16, tuesday-saturday, and am i fine with that? well, it’s not IDEAL, but since my wife works on a flexible office hours schedule and we share a vehicle, we can swing it. step three: i get offered the job. once again they tell me it’s 7:30-16 and ask me to confirm that i’m okay with this. i say yes. step four: i go to orientation as instructed, though i have still not been given my actual schedule – i assume that this will be offered to me during orientation. step five: it is! which is to say that the day BEFORE my actual work schedule begins, i am handed a printout of an email which informs me that i’m expected to work 13:30-22:00 for a WHOLE MONTH during the training period. this…

step one: i apply for a job

step two: during the interview i’m told that the hours are 7:30-16, tuesday-saturday, and am i fine with that? well, it’s not IDEAL, but since my wife works on a flexible office hours schedule and we share a vehicle, we can swing it.

step three: i get offered the job. once again they tell me it’s 7:30-16 and ask me to confirm that i’m okay with this. i say yes.

step four: i go to orientation as instructed, though i have still not been given my actual schedule – i assume that this will be offered to me during orientation.

step five: it is! which is to say that the day BEFORE my actual work schedule begins, i am handed a printout of an email which informs me that i’m expected to work 13:30-22:00 for a WHOLE MONTH during the training period. this has not been mentioned to me at any point during the hiring process, not even hinted at. everyone else at orientation is instructed to turn up at 7:30. but i am supposed to turn up at 13:30 and work until 22:00, and get informed THE DAY BEFORE???

step six: ???? no, absolutely not. i made it clear during the hiring process that i shared a ride, that i needed something that at least somewhat lined up with my wife’s schedule. also, i have tickets for a fucking musical tonight because i assumed, completely reasonably, that i would be off at 16. so i have sent them an email telling them that i cannot and will not work 13:30-22:00, and that i have at no point agreed to do so.

for $15/hour, i will not put up with this unmitigated horseshit. i will rather keep looking for a job, if they refuse to budge on this. i have yet to receive an answer, despite contacting them immediately after orientation 🙂
