Hey guys,
I'm currently a student and I have university job where I am a supervisor at a dorm hall. I schedule people, communicate items between my bosses to my staffers, and generally make sure the dorm desk is in good shape. I am a leader and an essential employee needed for the operation of this dorm.
The pay is decent for a university job, and I'm gaining good experience, but there is an issue.
Because of my position as a supervisor, I get brought issues with the desk even outside of work sometimes. This is usually about finding coverage. Since we usually only have one person working the front desk, if they call out, then we are out of luck. The desk is pretty vital to keep open, so they're adamant on keeping it open.
The issue arises when they text either me or my co supervisor asking us to find coverage for the desk if it is closed. This includes sending out numerous texts, maybe an email or two, and generally having my attention for the next few minutes.
They do acknowledge that this is work, so they allow us to punch in and do this work, but even if I'm getting paid for this, I still don't want to work randomly and without warning sometimes. I need my time away from work to do school, relax, and zone out. Not think about work.
So I guess I'm kind of at a crossroads here because I do really like my job at times. It comes with a lot of benefits and flexibility for a student job. However, I also feel on call sometimes especially when they text me to my personal phone asking us about current or future coverage. Should I quit? Or try and lay some ground rules? I have built up respect and status from my bosses, and they know I'm a good worker, but they also know I'll push back if needed so it is an option to give them feedback or work with them to solve this issue. What do you guys thing?
