Why am I bagging and checking my own groceries, yet paying the same/more for them?

I went to the grocery store yesterday and found that they've added EVEN MORE self-checkout lanes. In fact, I didn't see one cashier. So, why is it that I'm doing work that someone used to be paid to do, and yet I'm still paying the same price (more, actually) for my groceries? What's next? Eliminate aisles and make it a free-for-all warehouse? “Pick your own items out of the boxes. A fun activity for the whole family!” In a sane and just world, automation would make everyday essentials less expensive, give us some time back in our lives, and generally improve life for people. I hate that not only is a former cashier now out of a job, but now they have to do that job FOR FREE every time they go to the grocery store, AND pay the same amount for their food. This world is diseased.
