Hiring Manager: “What is your salary requirement?”

Me: “Before discussing a salary requirement, I'd like to hear more specific details about the role, team structure, and environment. However, based on my previous pay experience and how I am interpreting your job listing, I'd expect a salary range of $XX-XX. Can we discuss the job listing in more detail?”

Hiring Manager: “While we love your work and are impressed by your portfolio, we regret to inform you that we cannot meet your salary requirements and will be looking for someone else”

Me: Annoyed because I just wanted to confirm what they are asking for and wondering how anyone doing all of that work would take something less than what I mentioned. Oh well.
