Why do companies require doctor notes for basic human comforts?

I just started my first day at a well known discount store that sells clothes and home goods. I have some back issues (which they knew about when they hired me) and I also get extremely thirsty due to medications. I explained all of this to them. My first day they put me to work in the fitting room where you just stand all shift and watch people go in and out to make sure they aren't stealing. I wasn't allowed a chair or even allowed to have my water bottle. I was told I needed a doctor's note for these basic human comforts. I just don't understand why. It pissed me off so much that I left early. I was already hurting so bad because of my back from standing for two hours straight on hard floors. I didn't even have a comfort mat to stand on. Why do companies want to see their employees miserable while working?!?!?!?!?

I just don't think it's worth $12 an hr to be uncomfortable 6 to 8 hours a day.

Also, they have you watch a power point when you get hired on why Unions are bad and evil. Wtf?
