Why does rent increase but wages don’t?

Over the last few months, my landlord has steadily increased the price of my monthly rent “bEcAuSe Of ThE mArKeT”. Up to now, my measly paycheck covered rent; now it does not. I understand this is the trend for housing across the US- inflation is making housing impossibly expensive. So how come landlords are legally allowed to increase rent to the point of making people homeless, but there is zero legal responsibility for employers to increase wages based on inflation?
