why doesn’t america have a public funded free health system?

I recently made a post on this subreddit about my situation and challenges as a Brazilian who only makes 200-300 USD per month. so, we shared our views of different worlds, what scared me was to see that even though I'm from a poor country, health is not my concern because the government already provides it in a satisfactory way [at least in my city], I realized that many of you were doing well in life until some accident or illness happened, explained by the idea of [ go sick, go broke ], why is a public health system not possible in the United States? Wouldn't a public health system have more strength to lower the prices of big pharma? what would be the models for a possible American public health system … [ NHS UK, and other]?
