Why former boss won’t give references?

I worked for several years in one job. I was flexible and did all my job duties diligently. I had only a few days of sick leave during this period. I never asked for days off work outside of the vacation period. I was polite and respectful for my boss. I left that job in good terms. I recently tried to ask for a reference and my former boss didn’t respond anything for my request for letter of recommendation. This silent treatment is worse than if he would have just answered that he will not write a recommendation letter for some bs reason. I feel betrayed, as if I would have never even worked there. Does anyone here at antiwork community have knowledge about why some bosses to which you’ve been loyal to don’t even answer your request for reference?
