Dear anti workers – or as I like to call it, anti work abuse
Tl:dr: my boss claims I don't work, company supported him without showing any evidence.
I had a nice job after graduation in a big consulting firm that rhymes with BBC.
It was something new to me and out of my bachelor degree field, but it had a great pay and the best health insurance i have ever seen, as well as stability.
This was at the start of 2020 so covid immediately happened and I worked from home, managed to learn everything fairly quick and started to enjoy this position.
Sadly around the time I learned to like it, the department was set to shut down because, well they did not tell us the exact reason.
But it was a really reputable place and they offered us 2 solutions, either end the contract at the end of the year with a nice payout, or apply to other internal jobs.
Seeing I had no tenure there my only option was the internal jobs or starving, and only 1 of them would accept me since I am still new.
That is right about the time my job turned from a job to a room in hell.
To summarize everything, I had to go to the office 2 weeks a month which was fine for me.
But the working hours are 8 to 5, and I cam from a 9 to 6.
An important thing to know is that this company does not clock check, other employees walk in at 9 and 10. No time checking except for my line manager who calls the other employees instead of calling me and asks them if I am there yet, since I usually walk in at 8:15.
Now, 15 minutes in the morning, is there any missed work? no
Missed deadlines? no
Complaints from other people? no
My peer reviews? Excellent
Me doing unpaid over time if needed? Yes sure as long as I get the job done.
Our overtime is 1 hour of work is one hour of “vacation”
so I can take 4 hours for example as half a day off
But at the end of the year, I get my yearly review, and it was real bad.
The main claim is that I only do half my job. I disagreed of course and asked to see reports or evidence, anything that supports their reviews and what are the basing this review on.
They claimed I take my overtime off without informing my manager, but I only did it twice and he approved.
Instead of getting these reports, I got a couple of examples that I shot down as wrong, and when I did I was asked to not think about those because they are just examples??????
And instead of getting reports I was put on a performance improvement plan, what this means is that if I do not fulfill in 3 months, I get fired.
At that points I was tired of arguing and just said sure fine I will do it.
But what made my blood boil is when they send the plan, and it was filled with things I am already doing.
But what broke the camel's back was one of the main criteria I need to work on.
“Show passion and dedication” when I saw that I simply refused to sign such a ridiculous request.
And 3 months down the line, they really wanted me to sign so they can extend the plan for 3 more months, and I told them the truth, I do not trust them to not fire me after 3 months, especially when they think showing passion and dedication is something to be put as an action point.
So I quit, since they have already been saying that to me for the better part of a year.
I am tired, I can't deal with moronic claims.
I get paid to do a job, not be there exactly at 8 and leave exactly at 5.
I still hate that they just approved of that whole thing with 0 evidence of missing work, all they need was what my boss says and that is apparently the truth.
And to give you more perspective, we had a week by week work module, so 1 week at home, then 1 week at the office, and the week I am at thew office he is at home.
He has tarnished my reputation and I discovered he told people I am too arrogant to do office work because I have a good degree and everyone believed him.
Whenever I said that the work load for today is too much and I need to do some of the low priority tasks another day I would get told to learn time management.
But I know for a fact the real reason this all happened is he dislikes any employee who walks in after 8 even by 5 minutes (again this company does not log entry or exit times) since he arrives there around 7 and to him everyone is late.
So that was my last 2.5 years, turns out you can't argue with a senior if he has befriended all the big bosses.
Wish me luck in finding a new job, at least my head is finally clear, I haven't felt happy ever since I moved to his department.
