Today I had a conversation with the people in my work group. One of them asked for more tasks to do since they have finished theirs earlier than expected. When I jokingly commented on it, the higher-up in the group chat said everyone does it, everyone with a “heart” (To be fair, I saw people in my group does that a lot). They don't earn more or anything. Even if the performance is off the roof, we don't receive a dime more.
For context, I'm not in the US so the numbers are very different regarding wage and living cost. My job is an entry level one and pay a bit more than minimum wage. But for easier comparison, a quick google search said that the living cost in my city is 30% higher than what people working in the same level as me make (which is most of the group). To be even fairer, realistically, you can live by with the salary they pay us (If you eat instant noodles for some meals), but barely and with nothing much left to save.
This is to show that no matter how low companies pay, there will still be people who work with passion, or should I say “heart”, for free. I seem to be in the minority here as I'm the only one with opinion on this and always the first to leave when the clock hits 4. Others would stay and work till the sky turns dark while receive nothing from it. Crazy.
