Why should retail workers/ fast food etc. jobs require to pay a living wage?

Had a discussion with a friend, I think companies should pay a living wage, and he says the opposite. They say that he sees nothing wrong with those jobs paying minimum for young people and it’s because of life choices that you should realistically get a well paying job. He doesn’t think that these companies should be responsible for paying higher than minimum wage if they don’t want to. He also said that it’s because stocking shelves and doing a different higher paying job is different in skill and how much responsibilities you have at said job. Ex. Someone messing up a menial task at a retail job is different than let’s say a pharmacist giving someone the wrong medication. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
