Wife’s boss requesting her to make up days on her normally scheduled days off? Among other questionable things…

Need some advice, Reddit. My wife has been working for her current employer for about 3 months now. The boss, while a seemingly nice lady, has some pretty shitty business practices. The current problem, is that my wife is feeling extremely burnt out due to her job and a series of negative events that have come up in our lives. So, she took today off to rest and recharge. The boss said something along the lines that she's sorry she's not feeling well and to get better soon, but then sends a text basically saying that she “generally asks that employees make up a day, to give clients the option to reschedule.” She then asked if my wife could come in on Wednesday or Saturday, which is her normal scheduled days off. This would seriously defeat the whole reason she's taking a day off, as then she would have to work 6 days in a row and just burn herself out more. I believe this is absolutely fucked for her boss to try and make her come in on a day off and to me just breeds a work culture of employees coming in sick if they know they're going to be 'punished' for taking off. The main point is, we're not sure how to address this. She hasn't responded to her boss yet because she doesn't know what to say. My wife is disabled and reliant on me or our family for transportation, so I suggested she say that we are unavailable to get her to work on her scheduled days off, so tough shit. However, she's worried that will mean that they won't ever contact her to pick up shifts on those days, even if she's able to. The ultimate goal is to find her another job, since this job/boss is the worst she's had. We're trying to avoid her getting fired though, since I am not working.

On a side note, I'm very tempted to report her boss to the NLRB anyway, since she has it written in their handbook that discussing pay is forbidden and punishable up to termination. Once again, I don't want to cause her to lose her job, though. Even if we could fight it as retaliation, we would rather not deal with that. Any advice?
