So my work decided that due to the excessive heat in my area that they were going to send people home for the next 3-4 days since we work around hot, heavy machinery and molten plastic.
Great right? Nope
People who are being sent home due to what the company deems “unsafe working conditions” aren’t being compensated. They were told to use their vacation or sick time even though they have no choice over if they would come to work or not.
But it gets better
Our company has decided to run 2 out of the 34 machines we currently own and is making teams of 6 (day shift, swing, graveyard and the 12hr employees) continue to work during the heat wave. We are not being offered any extra pay, had no say whether or not we came and if we didn’t show up or called out it would be a strike on our attendance.
Oh and did I mention that supervisors and big bosses don’t have to be here?
Our company decided that it would be fitting to add 5 minutes to our two 10 minute breaks and that was about it. I’m currently on hour 5 of 12 being my third day in and I’m sweating like crazy with a bad headache. I’m pounding water and I’m working with heavy equipment but I feel completely exhausted.
I don’t get why everyone is sent home without pay due to the company’s standard of “unsafe work environment” while those of us still here are sweltering in the heat and not being offered anything for working in an “unsafe” environment
