I am flabbergasted by the posts I see here of people's bosses texting them to cover a shift or be generally shitty. I don't actually think my boss has my number. Because this is work and not a fucking frat, we message on slack. He's my boss, not a “buddy”. If I set slack to say I'm away from my desk/office, I won't get any messages until the start of my next shift. my boss does the same. Nobody is expected to answer their phones when it isn't their shift.
Normalize more professional lines of communication with your employees. Either email them, slack them, in an emergency, call them on their listed business number.
We start to see these posts of bosses excoriating their employees about covering a shift and we're starting to make that our new normal. That is not normal, do not let it become normal. If you're boss is texting you, then you're working while texting them and should get paid for it.
I don't even think about work problems when I'm off the clock. If i start thinking about a work problem while at home, I keep track of the time I spent thinking about it and add it to my over time statement at the end of the week.
We set the rules here.
