Yes, there are plenty of toxic nonprofits, but I will never work at a “for profit” again.

Being a nonprofit is not, in and of itself, anything special in terms of workplace culture. Plenty of them are just as toxic and abusive as for profits. That being said, I think, on the whole, there is something to be said for knowing your labor isn't going to make someone else rich. You might even find one that has a mission you're excited about. Fighting homelessness, helping people with disabilities, ending global hunger, this list is endless. My experience is that nonprofits can be more forgiving if you need to take a sick day or need some schedule flexibility. Obviously, if making a lot of money is your goal, you won't get rich working for a nonprofit. But the organization I work for is definitely paying me what I think I'm worth. Even better, I don't get shit for wanting to take a 2 or 3-week paid vacation.
