You need to work a Year in order for you to have a Family Emergency

I’ve been working at my current job for about 8 months but 2 weeks ago my mother got into a car accident that landed her in the ICU. I immediately took off work and filed for Family Leave of Absence in order to help her and my family to take care of her. Today, I received a letter stating that my request was denied because I hadn’t yet worked a year with the company so the time I had missed work was considered unapproved and may result in corrective action. This is a multi billion dollar company who I would have hoped would have a better policy regarding family emergencies. EDIT: This was my best plan of action after my manager told me I couldn’t use sick time (our employee guide says under family illness or injury we can qualify) or find coverage for the 4-6 shifts that I would be missing (i’m part time) I’m also a minor if that helps.
