I work at a rather large racing equipment and parts retailer as maintenance/housekeeping. I had my work review today and the manager said “you do an average job. You only do the bare minimum and we never see you going above and beyond you’re work duties. Why is that?”
Note I only make $14/hr and unlike other departments in the company, maintenance/Housekeeping has zero room for moving up in promotion and has the lowest rates for raises. Other departments have team leads, supervisors, and managers. We just have our 3 managers, no team leads, no supervisors.
I told my managers that there are no incentives to go do more than what’s expected of me. Annual raises are only at most $0.50 and no room for promotions. There are people I work with that’s been there 25+ years and still in the same position, only making no more than $16.50.
He told me if I scored a 80% or higher on my review, I’d get a $0.40 raise. Last week, I was recognized for my hard work and as a “reward” they gave me a $10 company branded Tshirt they grabbed off the racks in the store. I told him to keep the shirt and felt like it’s an insult. If I’m doing such a good job (even though i only do what’s expected, despite now I’m ‘average’ performance) then pay me accordingly or find a way to move me to another department for better pay.
Why should I bust my ass going above and beyond when there’s nothing motivating me to do so?
I have a degree in Telecommunications engineering. I applied for their telecom position and was told “you don’t have the required experience.” (Their telecom handles their radio frequency equipment, intercom systems, intranet and CCP. They also build and sell equipment for amateur radio, which they say isn’t in any form telecom…yet I can build radio systems from scratch.)
What the hell is with these companies? I’m not giving you extra time and work when A: there’s no reward/incentives for it. B: you ignore my degree field of study and say I’m not good fit, yet the person in charge of telecom department started the company with just a GED and zero knowledge of telecommunications. C: I only get 4 sick days a year, which I had to use all at once when I got Covid last month…so now I can’t take no time off, even to visit my 80 yr old father that lives 6 states away.
“Nobody wants to work!” No, people will work but you offer nothing to make people want to work.
My depression is in rapid decline once again. I can barely afford food and bills since $14/hr doesn’t get you very far.
Just fuck this whole shit. I’m about ready to just give up and live as a nomad hobo.
Sorry for the rant. I needed to vent and just want someone, anyone to listen and understand.
