Just recently seen the post about someone’s coworker basically being ridiculed by the other staff for possibly needing more than 3 days off. Just triggered a horrible memory for me, and needed to share incase it helps others.
My ex coworkers and I were quite close, we would hangout outside of work and attend each others weddings/baby showers ect.
In one month my grandma died as well as two of my coworkers. We worked at a VERY reputable hospital so I assumed the Union would cover us for the expected three days and then I could call in sick for two. The loss wasn’t that devastating for me and she had be declining for years and was a shell of herself, but my mother was inconsolable. She worked at the same facility as me 7 years prior and told me to take the 3 days and call in sick for two to be with her. I told my boss and she scoffed. She said my coworker (let’s call him Bob) grandmother had died a week before and he only took the “two bereavement days” and I wouldn’t be covered. I cackled back to call the fucking Union and send me an email in writing that it wasn’t three and hung up. Shortly I received an email from the DON stating exactly what my mother said, I could in fact take three days and use up to three sick days after if needed.
I called Bob and told him they lied, he had the right for an extra bereavement day to be taken within the month of her death. He took the next day off.
Now my other coworker (let’s say Sally) grandmother died the following week. She asked me how I took off so much time as our boss again said to her only two days allowed. I fucking printed out that email so quick and posted it on every floor. Sally took the full six days combined. My boss was seething but the Union backed us up.
Of your boss tells you not to share information with your coworkers, you probably should!! Fuck that place.
