Your Nice To Have is Not My Priority Or Hard Deadline

People are quitting. Which means more and more gets piled onto my plate. Deadlines keep getting pushed or not met. And now I get to learn a whole new side of the business. Made a commitment to someone to help them out with a nice to have, a “health check” if you will. Problem is, this will take me at least half a day to get done. Half a day that I do not have. And I'm not working late or putting in time on the weekend because of someone elses nice to have. What really burns me is I was counting on this person to support me in getting information from relevant stakeholders. I copied them on all emails asking for the info. Asked every morning for 3 days. Still have not gotten it. The dude asking me for help is in the same building as those with the info. I'm in a different city. His support could make my life so much easier in this regard, but he doesn't seem to care. But still expects me to honor my commitment to him for his nice to have. Well I keep getting new things thrown on my plate due to people quitting. And I do not have time to help you, especially when the information I need has not yet come through. I flat out told him that I have to prioritize my hard deadlines. He says he understands but that my health check for him is important to both him and our vice president. Well, sorry bud. I do not have time.

I don't want to make an ass of myself professionally, but I really want to grill this other dude who I do not report to but is higher up than I am in the organization on how his support could have made my life easier and he did not take the initiative to knock on someone's door and press them for the information I need.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm getting tired of this crap. I want to look for a new position, but I'm gonna have a kid soon and don't want to lose the opportunity to take FMLA. Just need to stick it out for the Summer. Tried explaining to my VP that we do not have enough resources. He seemed receptive to my ideas on how we could restructure the org and wants to chat further. I'll be interested to see where that goes. I'm told I'm a high performer who needs to work on my delivery and people skills in order to break into leadership. Well when people pull crap like this and we are overwhelmed with things to do, it's pretty tough for me to keep my cool and act like all is well.
