You’re Welcome VS. No Problem

Hello all! I wanted your opinions on something that happened to me at work today: Context – I'm 26M and I work at a grocery store in the fruit and vegetable department. Today I had a specific customer, an elderly gentleman who asked me to cut a cauliflower in half for him, so I did and when I gave it to him he said “thank you” and I replied “No problem!” Then shit went south. He pulled me back towards him and scolded me for saying “no problem”. He said “You know that's very rude manners you have their young man. The proper response is You're welcome not no problem. You should really hold yourself to a higher standard and represent your business properly. The slang you use makes you look uncultured and that reflects poorly on the company you work for. Next time I shop here we will try…

I was absolutely bewildered and I've been thinking it over all day, I'm not sure who was in the right and if he was right maybe he could have gone about it nicer… What do you think? I’m definitely saying you’re welcome from now on
