1 year ago my boss said, and I quote, “your next raise will be worth the wait”…I got a $1.00hr. raise

I work for a fulfillment company as a programmer/IT support. I have worked here for a little over a year and a half. The job posting had a salary range listed of $35k-$45k per year. It is an entry level job so, while it is a bit on the low side, I would have taken anything to finally get a job in this field. They offered me the job and gave me the lowest end of the range possible($17/hr.) because I “had no experience with SQL”(main language is python). After 6 months, I had a performance review and got a small raise, which bumped me up to about $38.5k a year($18.50/hr.). I wasn't upset, most places won't give you a raise until the 1-year mark, and again I was thrilled to have a programming job. At the end of the review, my boss said my next review would be a…

After 6 months, I had a performance review and got a small raise, which bumped me up to about $38.5k a year($18.50/hr.). I wasn't upset, most places won't give you a raise until the 1-year mark, and again I was thrilled to have a programming job. At the end of the review, my boss said my next review would be a year from that point and that the raise “would be worth the wait”.

For a little background, I've been having my income supplemented by my parents and grandpa the entire year and a half I've been working for this company. I would not be able to afford my bills if they were not helping out.

So, the year goes by. The wait is finally over. I was very excited for my review and to see what the company was going to offer me. Seeing as how this is a very competitive field, I was expecting the lowest they would offer would be $25/hr.(Still not amazing but I would be financially secure).

I looked at the offer and I honestly could not believe what I saw. $1 per hour increase, +5%, $19.50/hr……this is what I fucking waited for? I busted my ass, worked off the clock,(which I swore to myself I would never do) stayed late, did everything I could to make sure customers and employees were happy. This is how they treat me. A fucking dollar. $40 extra bucks a week.

I immediately put in PTO for today, Thursday, and Friday. I need time to find a job that will actually pay me a living wage. Well, this got the attention of the owner and so he called me. I told him the offer was insulting to which he was 'shocked'(bullshit, IMO). So now he wants to meet with me in person today, probably to tell me to my face that he won't be paying me any more, or the fire me. I'm not sure at this point. I really don't give a shit though. If this company valued me at all they would not have offered me a $1 raise.

Fuck you, pay me.
