So proud of and thankful for everyone that turned out. It was a really strange feeling being there today.
It was heartbreaking to hear some of the stories, people truly passionate about the work they do for the community (nurses, educators, firies, the list goes on) that can’t afford rent or fuel, are living in their car, or driving a 20 year old one and praying every morning that today wasn’t the day it broke down. Though underpaid for my profession, I’m fortunate not to be struggling (yet…) so hearing these stories, my first reaction was guilt. How could I be there asking for more, when I had enough and these people were so close to having nothing.
But I realised I wasn’t there for me, and it felt good to lend a voice and stand up for those who really need the support.
The union rep told us that for every one person that shows up at these rallys, the assumption is that 10 people feel the same way, 20 if it’s raining. Never has voting with your feet mattered so much!
For anyone that can, in any country, any industry, get out there, get counted, and get yours
