I have a elderly coworker who I like as long as we don’t talk about the current day struggles because I was told “Money isn’t everything, at least I have my health” Well I asked her “& do you have the money?” “Well..yeah” ALRIGHTY THEN! No room to speak! I get that older people worked for their money but these current times are NOT like it was back then!! It’s just not!! Between rent, gas, food, regular bills? It’s ridiculous!!! And the wages? You have to FIGHT AND FIGHT for more to simply LIVE. She then today is going on about medicare and how it really doesn’t help but just a few days ago told me how America is still the best out of everywhere she has traveled (which is a lot) I forever wish that if I ever get the money myself, I NEVER forget the struggle I came…

Why do employers expect you to care about their business anymore than what's on your job description. If you aren't entitled to any of the profits beyond what they pay you, why would you take on any more stress or liability then giving them your time? This is a given expectation when you join a company, is there a way we can fight back on this? For example, If a co-worker calls out, and your boss calls you to drop everything and fill in for said co-worker…it is not your problem they didn't accommodate for the likelihood of both of the employees being unavailable… That is the risk of doing business, and somehow employers want employees to mitigate this risk by giving up their day off. The US does not use flex companies, and I think it needs to be more common where employees who can't come in for work,…
Everyone here should make a LinkedIn.
There are constant questions asked by employers that get boot licking consensus that we could do a good job of skewing more towards real life. Questions like “why did you leave your last job?” and “What is something an employer could do to better retain workers” and they are only getting the limited audience of current LinkedIn members. Disrupting the platforms that normalize worker abuse will help disrupt the abuse itself IMO. Just a thought.
I've been trying to apply for food stamps (CalFresh) ever since June, when my previous application expired. The combination of working full time, going to school, and dealing with severe mental health issues makes it hard enough for me to submit paperwork and make/keep appointments, but the food stamps office's lack of communication/organization makes it impossible. This is roughly what happens every time I finish the online application: I get a text saying my application was submitted and they will contact me shortly for a phone interview. 2-3 days later, I get a text message saying that I either missed my phone interview (scheduled for a date/time that I was never informed of) or need to submit more paperwork before I can schedule a phone interview. I submit the paperwork if asked, and call to re-schedule my interview. Wait on hold for 2-4 hours, may or may not get disconnected…
I work in tech and my job is to write software and build a product. About once a quarter I check in on some of the SaaS we purchase and update management on our spend. Over the years the company has grown, usage went up, and management didn’t care. Six months ago I did my typical quarterly brief on cost and they asked me to bring it down. They didn’t have any numbers in mind just “less”. I saved them more than 10 million dollars. Review time comes I get the usual good review a nominal increase in pay and a pat on the back. Generally speaking I understand my role is to build a product that makes money, improve our margins, and I get paid a salary in return. In reality I get paid the same salary as all the other folks who didn’t directly help the business bottom…
TLDR: the manager at the restaurant I work at started scheduling 10-hour shifts with no notice where we get no breaks. My coworkers are all cool with it but I definitely am not. So, I’m a server. At the company I work at, when bartenders work 8 hours they get a break and a meal. In the almost year I’ve been working there, I have never gotten a break. According to them, “it’s just not practical.” I worked 11.5 hours on thanksgiving (I was supposed to work 8) with no break and it was the busiest I’ve ever been. I expressed concerns, got dismissed, and they moved on. Recently, I saw that my in-time was 12:30 pm. That’s odd because the restaurants I work at are only open for dinner, so I never go in before 3:00 (rarely) but usually 4:00 or 5:00. I also noticed it was an 8-hour…
My husband has been with his job for years and is so burned out, anxious and depressed. He’s been made to work 80+ hours a week on salary. Other than constantly being on calls and computer work from 7am-11pm or later, he’s made to travel to other stores in his company owned vehicle. Some of the stores are in other states, 12-15 hours away. The last time, he decided to fly instead. Yesterday his boss called and bitched him out, letting him know that flying is not acceptable. He explained that driving was time for reflection and communication (these 12 plus hours are plagued with work calls after work calls.) I feel like this can’t be legal. I’m very concerned for obvious reasons but also because I’ve personally witnessed him almost fall asleep behind the wheel multiple times. How can this be legal?!
