My scumbag of an ex-boss is spreading rumors about one of my ex-coworkers

About one month ago, I left my previous job due to crazy overtime that was not paid and landed another job that offered me a better position, higher compensation and more life/work balance friendly schedule. No regrets. I’ve been in touch with one of my ex-coworkers (let’s call him R) who also wasn’t having any of it and was on the verge of quitting. Finally, he did it just on the last week and then told me about his rather curious dialogue with our ex-boss. Here’s one important piece of info before I proceed to tell the rest of the story. Me and R weren’t the first ones to quit our department, the exodus was started by another guy (let’s call him K) around a half year ago. K quit the job in the middle of an important project due to the exact same reasons, and the boss wasn’t happy…

K quit the job in the middle of an important project due to the exact same reasons, and the boss wasn’t happy about it. And K quit burning the bridge.

Now back to the main story. R went to the boss and informed him about his decision. Everything went peacefully but then the boss told that K had recently called him about going back to the company. And then, in rather snarky manner, he told that K burned some important equipment at his current job and was on the verge of being fired but was kept out of pity.

R then called K and asked him about that and, needless to say, K replied that all of that was a pile of steaming BS. In fact, this wasn’t the first time K heard such rumors about himself.

Now that I’ve heard about this I’m kinda stunned, to be honest. And glad, glad that I don’t have to work for that petty and lying scumbag anymore. I’m not that close to K but perhaps I should contact him and encourage him to sue the scumbag for slander if he hasn’t already done so.
