Is Work From Home Realistic?
I'm from a very small town, and come from a line of life-long workers. I'm been driven insane at my current job, and have a 12+ hour workday from when I wake up to when I get home. Haven't made a change because I can't find the same pay/benefits anywhere else that doesn't require 30 years experience and a degree. But there's got to be something better than this in life. I do parts ordering and logistics for a Caterpillar dealer. Are there viable WFH jobs out there that can make a living?
I am very onboard with many things discussed on this subreddit. But I have to stop and question the name of it. Antiwork, for those unfamiliar, can allude to the user base being against working in general and many other gross assumptions by some people. Historically movements like antiabortion changed their name to pro life. Why? Because human psychology and branding. Do you think we are doing ourselves a disservice by allowing bad actors to use the subs name – out of context – to present our members and posts as being against working in general? I think we have to a certain extent. But what can we do? I’m not sure, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. So I would like to open this discussion to all. Do we need to employ some of the rhetorical strategies and branding to get our message across clearly? Or…
Typing Test
Had a virtual interview today for a Training Department Manager position. Major corporation, great benefits, great pay, right in line with my background, experience and education. Interview went great. Felt really good, like I had sold them on hiring me. Was told they would like me to take a skills assessment. No problem, I thought, probably Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, (which I’m certified to teach). Nope, as the title says, it was a typing test. One of those where you have two minutes to copy a random paragraph, without being able to correct any errors. Now, mind you, my typing is good. 65 wpm, usually very few errors. I’ve have a bit of practice over the last 40 years. But there is absolutely no need for a Manager anywhere to need fast, accurate typing skills. Especially not with word processing programs, autocorrect and spellcheck. Heck, I use a text expander…
Can’t make this shit up
My therapist suggested I write this stuff down so here I go. TLDR: fraud inside company ends up as hidden footnote. My (37f if it matters) career at this company was somewhat long (8yr) and I worked in multiple departments and specialty projects along the way. My prior company is a public one involved in specialty finance (but >1B in annual revenue and >8k employees). I was responsible for the migration of key operating systems. We started out with contractors doing a lot of the development work as the rest of IT was involved in other projects. Over the 3+ years we mostly kept the contractors on (only letting go of the ones that weren’t performing) and slowly pulled in the FTEs as the project expanded scope as POCs proved positive. I was working on business requirements but midway through I was asked to build an enterprise data lake and…
We doing anything for r/place gang?
fear for safety dismissed
Not entirely sure if this is the correct place to be posting this, but I just need to get it off my chest I’ve been at my workplace for nearly 10 years, in November of 2021 I was threatened with physical violence, verbally assaulted, and threatened to be followed home by another worker. He quit and 2 months later was rehired. The formal complaints (3 of them) I had written was never submitted to HR as explicitly stated by the one employers and then I was gaslighted into them saying “we never said that”. I contacted HR myself and was told, very clearly that they did not handle the situation properly. I was accused of the employers of lying, saying I was the one doing the abuse, and threatened to be terminated. They have since said they will not take action. Don’t really know what else to do, I joined…
I was lied to
I was a good kid in school. Never in trouble. Never touched drugs. Got good grades. I even got to graduate early because my grades were good enough. Never heavy into the alcohol. I got my first job as soon as I was legally allowed to. I worked 30 hours a week regularly whilst I was in high school. Still got good grades. I studied. I got my bachelors, graduated with distinction. I even got a couple certificates and diplomas to supplement them. I worked most of that time too. It was hard. Lots of 5am starts, not coming home until 9pm. Repeat seven days a week. I’m 27 now. I have less than $10k in savings. I have no assets except a car that’s beginning to break down. I honestly don’t know what will become of me in a year’s time. I’ll have to move out of my place,…
So i got scouted for a job as a Service Team Lead for an IT help desk company and went through the interview process. I got the job, which was advertised and repeatedly confirmed to be an online job with one physical visit every fortnight, only to be told the day after I sign that the job is not online (contrary to the contract), claiming it was an “honest miscommunication” but agree to get me a raise to cover transportation. Two days later a salary rep from New York calls to ask me if I can take the lower salary and come to the office three times a week, to which I refuse, so they rescind the job offer the day before my contract began. Apparently they didn't want to make my coworker “jealous” by upping my pay (just up his pay too?? We were the same title) when he's…
Someone explain this to me.
Bare with me this is long. So a few days ago I was at work watching people in a pit as I do confined space for nuclear power. Basically our job is to make sure the people in the pit have good air measurements and are safe as they work. Now I’m fully alert usually and I wasn’t sleepy. But I felt my co worker tap my shoulder. So I see her and told her how many people were in the current pit. The thing is she told me I was asleep. Im confused because I thought I was awake the entire time. I don’t remember having fell asleep. So she tells me I was in a deep sleep. And was openly annoyed. So I get called in to the office and my boss shows me a picture of me hunched over asleep. So being asleep on this type of…
