Purposely ruined an interview today

Already had a job lined up that I had gotten hired for the day before. I don't like burning bridges but I also don't like unprofessionalism from employers and I believe they should be held accountable when they don't hold to the same rules and guidelines as they expect from us. The company in question had already promised a phone call to set up the zoom appointment the day before. I gave them the full day and then had to reach out the following day (yesterday) to actually finally get the details. Fast forward to this morning, I was in the zoom lobby 10 minutes early as requested, the recruiter was 5 minutes late into the zoom meeting. She said hi username (yes it's still ridiculous) my first question was, do you know what time it is? You're 5 minutes late to a zoom meeting that you required me to…

Doing my taxes made me realize being poor makes you more poor

So a couple weeks ago my wife and I did our taxes online and filed jointly for the first time. For reference, she makes twice as much as I do. She entered her information and deductions in first, and when she was done the return amount came to $6k. Then me, the lesser earning one, put in my information and deductions in. By the time I was done our return went from $6k to $700. We're still making money back, but had she filed separately she would've made a bunch of money and I would've owed a bunch of money. I was just confused about the whole thing. Like I was able to maintain a living with my W2 wages, but had I owed ~$4k by myself I'd have been screwed. And if I'm able to live comfortably but am constantly in fear of owing money, then I can't imagine…

I got written up at work for “using downtime inappropriately” and was reported to managers by coworkers. Those same coworkers abuse downtime habitually. The only different is: I am not drinking buddies with management. Why do we do this to each other?

Edit: difference* ugh autocorrect I guess I should provide more context. I work at a brewery as a bartender and server; currently job hunting for something else. Management and the “clique” here all hang out at the “staff table” with the brewers and other staff who are off the clock. They screw around on their phones and joke around while I run around and work and do their jobs. When I use that same downtime to periodically go to the back and rest my feet, drink some water, or pet the brewery cats. We are very understaffed at the moment and it is pretty slow from time to time. There is only so much “deep cleaning” you can do. I constantly get told to go do this or that during downtime while other staff members hang around on their phones in front of management.

I told my workplace six months ago that someone in my family has six months to live, and now I can’t get leave. What the fuck.

I work in advertising for an agency. If you have also worked at an agency, this won’t surprise you. — Me six months ago: Hi guys I have some news. [Family member] is terminal and has been given six months. I’m okay to work now but I am also caretaking so I will need to reduce my hours as it gets closer. Work: I’m so sorry. We will do everything we can to support you. — Work three months ago: Hey OP your performance is falling, what’s going on? Me: Hey sorry, I’ve been struggling heaps with my situation both emotionally and mentally. Caretaking has been so difficult. As I’m the only person in my role I have been unable to take much leave, what can we do? Work: So sorry to hear, yes we are trying to find someone but the market is so tight (it is tight but…

We should not glorify overworking and treat workaholics as having a mental disorder

My manager is a self proclaimed workaholic, who puts in 50-60 hour weeks and usually works on weekends. Our work culture isn't like that but my manager imposes alot of pressure on the team and she's burnt herself out before. There are fewer deadlines this month, which would be the perfect time to allow herself and the team to take a break. Instead, when the topic of Easter break comes up, my manager wants to come in to work during the holiday and use the quiet time to be “productive”. I've made it clear I have no plans of coming in to work, during a public holiday. I don't consider it healthy to be overworking and being a workaholic is an addiction. There's nothing to be proud of being a workaholic or spending all your time working. I want to spend time with the people that matter to me and…
