There is one – and only one – reason to mandate in-office work: so middle managers can lord their power over you and make you appear busy so they can justify their categorical – and total – uselessness to higher management. That's not 80% of it, not 99% of it, it's 100.00% of it. The whole god damn pie.
I hope every single one of those managers surveyed who mandate their employees head back to the office end up slinging lattes for 80 hours a week at minimum wage as their staff quits in droves. If you're one of those workers who is mandated to return to the office, please feel empowered to quit on the spot and realize there's more to life than spending 2 hours a day to commute to an office to be a lemming under soul-sucking florescent lighting for the benefit of an anthropomorphic Vogon.
