Merit vs. seniority pay

I have a serious question for everyone here. I manage around 65 field employees plus a handful of supervisors. We were more than competitive with wages at the beginning of the year, but obviously the real world is changing quick and a dollar just doesn’t hit the same as it used to. I’m actively bumping people up this year to make up for it, but I have some middle-tier people asking for more money just because they been at our company longer then some other people, doing the same job. Is that fair? I switched us to merit based raises 3-4 years ago, mostly to attract new talent. Nobody wants to do a job they should be paid more to do, just to wait for the yearly maybe-pay-raise. What do you all think? Should you get paid more just for being at a company longer than someone else? Or should…
