No reviews until I ask for a raise

My team and my scope of responsibility has roughly doubled in the last 18 months. Two weeks ago I finally asked for my pay to be evaluated and brought in line with my work. I specifically explained that while I’m open to feedback and evaluation of my work, that I was requesting an adjustment based on the expansion of my department, not on performance and that I think those are two separate issues. My boss said he agreed I was due for an adjustment. I asked for a lot—a 35% increase.

Since then it’s been an exercise in asking me to document every program and project I’ve worked on and how much money has been saved under my management. It’s simply turned into an intense performance review.

Today my boss asked for details on a program that is probably the least well-managed in my dept and I just haven’t given it a ton of scrutiny. I wasn’t able to provide all the details he asked for.

So this one program that is running just fine, but isn’t really optimized, will probably be the thing they use to deny my request. At the beginning of 2021 I had 8 employees. I now have 16 who all reported to other people who quit and aren’t being replaced. No one needed to evaluate my performance when I took on additional responsibility.

In seven years I haven’t received one formal performance review and I’ve never been written up. Now that I’m asking for a significant raise it’s all about my job performance.

I want to just quit but if I do, I would be almost immediately behind on bills.
