What Changed?

Serious question: You see images of the old miners, sun-worn farmers, etc. But, I know so many men that were crippled by skilled labor jobs by 35-40 years old. Landscapers, flooring installers, plumbers, carpenters, etc. By crippled I mean bad backs so they can't sit OR stand for long and aren't really good for anything else. What changed? Is it our lifestyle wearing us out so young? Is it something in the job expectations? Did people used to work slower or work together more?
