As with many of us – the office has become quite a difficult place to be. Pay is abysmal, work loads have skyrocketed 3-fold, staffing is an all time low and around half the staff have verbally admitted they want to quit. We have no union so our only ways to “organize” are basically talking to each other on the sly. We know we're all in the same boat, and it's been no secret that profits are through the roof the last 1.5 years too. There's no shortage of “Atta boy team!” messages celebrating how great the company is doing while we're dying on the floor.
Current thoughts are trying to pick a date in advance and get people to agree “On this date (and moving forward) we won't be working.”Another idea was having everyone drop off a letter to the upper management so they can see just how many people are on the verge of leaving and hanging the company out to dry. It'll cost a lot more money to lose 80% of your customers when you lose your staff after all.
Some concerns: There will be people that are sympathetic and will say “Well I agree with you but I need more people to be involved and there's no guarantee they don't back out.” and risk their job. Mind you – we're not in a position to have anyone let go or fired, but it's fair to still think there's a risk.Duration: Not everyone can hold out, many are paycheck to paycheck. While it probably wouldn't take very long (a week tops my guess) – the uncertainty can be risky.
A BIG question: If there's a strike: are people be allowed to clock in and just perform 5% of duties, or do we have to all have to stay away? I know employers can't remove pay but there must be reasons this doesn't happen in other strikes (and the idea to do 5% of tasks just to be like “See I AM working”)
