So my company choose me, a junior software engineer, to be expertise lead of a new team since all of them would be new hires.
They told me that it was a big career opportunity and I was at first terrified but in a couple of weeks everything was running smoothly. I was the reference and the go-to-guy whenever a new junior or a new senior had any doubts about our software.
After three months of my new position, I asked my manager for a little raise (+3k€). It was the raise that I would get anyway in six months when I reached the two year mark in the company but I thought that I deserved that now since my new position and responsibility and all that.
They said no. That they weren't sure I was up to the role. That I had to wait half a year.
I was devastated. It took a toll on my self-esteem. But I was also angry, so I updated my LinkedIn profile.
And in two weeks I'll start working on a better company with a nice raise (+12k€).
So thank you, soon to be ex company that is now in panic since they will lose the only one in the team with more than 3 months of experience in the platform.
TL;DR: Don't be afraid to ask for what you think you deserve. And if they don't give it to you, find it elsewhere.
