How common is this question in a job interview?
“what are your salary/wage expectations?”
It strikes me as a real scam of a question. If they LIKE you in the interview and your salary expectation is lower than what they normally pay someone in that role what are the chances they actually pay you what the norm? (assuming there even is one).
Don't answer. I think I know.
If the field of candidates is not as good as what they'd hoped, do they then look at the best candidate with an acceptable pay expectation?
