My wife and I put out a Facebook ad to our local community, and found a person to watch our daughter while we went to the movies. Several people responded, and we chose a young lady who was willing to come to our house. She requested $10/hr, which she estimated to be $30 for us to go see a 2 hour move plus our drive time to the theater and back.
This was slightly below what the other people requested which was absurd to us.
Babysitting is a difficult job! If you baby sit you need to start demanding $15/hr minimum.
We told her we would give her $50 at first and she seemed very happy. But after thinking it over we realized not only would it take about 3 hours, but that she would have to drive to us. We estimated her drive to be 20 mins each way. So, that bumped it up to 4 hours for her in total.
My wife and I are also Bernie supporters and believe in a $15 minimum wage, which really should be $20 now… maybe more with inflation the last two years. So, we decided to give her $70 in total for the 4 hours of work.
We live in a place with a lower than average cost of living, and are not super wealthy ourselves… However, if we are going to pay $20 for popcorn/drinks, $15 for movie tickets, and $5+/gallon for gasoline, then babysitters deserve at least $15/hr.
