More of a vent ! I started on $27.50 AUD in a building supplies warehouse – think lifting heavy stuff in a dusty shed – I was told once I made full time in three months my rate would go up.
When I made full time it went down to $24.00 AUD. I’ve been planning my exit since (It was better for me to not just quit on the spot).
No, I wasn’t hired as a casual so have had a 20% rate drop due to going full time.
Get this but:
The Supervisors have been quite open telling me about how many businesses the owner owns (three), that he has other industrial properties and a number of houses in the rich part of my city – plus, that he wanted to try his hand at winemaking, so he bought a vineyard.
As one of the ‘perks’ we get a few beers after work on a Friday – where the managers and supervisors whinges about suppliers putting up costs by 10% each six months – the Supervisors will also openly talk about petrol and food etc inflation as well.
On top of that one Supervisor has the habit of yelling at us staff in front of customers and demanding we do things in a more manual handling harder way eg carrying 20kg boxes of tiles by walking x a few boxes rather than using one of the forklifts.
Plus –
One of the two Supervisors is retiring next month – this means one of the more experienced guys on the floor from us four on the floor will get his job, which means I’ll have to pick up an extra 33% work, plus be expected to shoulder more ‘responsibility’.
This co-worker has tried on directly ordering me to do stuff in the past – he’d make a terrible Supervisor.
Fuck that, the company can go to hell.
I have to give a weeks notice – I booked a weeks leave, it starts on Monday – I’ll be texting work my resignation on Monday morning and then I’ll get my union to get the two months underpayment money from them. I took all my personal stuff eg mug, phone charger on Friday.
New job I’ll start in two weeks pays $32 AUD an hour full time.
I’ve been absolutely smashed by recruiters for two weeks after spending one hour applying for a new job two weeks ago. Unfortunately a fair few of these have tried on the bait and switch with rates ala ‘we advertised $30-$35, but how’s $28?’ – so fuck them too lol.
