I (F20) work at a 3 month long summer camp run by a Catholic church. I share a car with my sister and gas is expensive, so I only work there because it’s within walking distance. My coworkers and I work almost 50 hours a week teaching kids age 4-12, and also had to be CPR certified and given firearm training. We’re paid below the minimum wage (min wage here is $12.50, we make $11) every other week.
My boss, the camp director, is paid more than double what we make. Most days, he doesn’t show up until the last hour of our day and won’t tell us when or even if he’s coming in at all. He requires we lock up our phones at the beginning of our shifts (6:30 am) and we can’t get them back until the end of the shift 10 hours later. He’s repeatedly been caught saying racist, sexist, and other harmful things to me and my coworkers, and somehow still has his job after almost being sued by parents for endangering their kids on more than one occasion. He wrote me up for having a “mean voice in general”, like the way my voice sounds all the time to everyone is a punishable offense.
We’ve been working here since the last week of May, and have only gotten paid $600~ for two weeks of training. When we asked him about it, he said he forgot to submit our paperwork and that’s why we haven’t gotten anything else yet. It’s July. Every day I get closer to quitting, and this is one of three jobs I work. He said we shouldn’t worry about the money because it should be seen as a “religious vocation” and not a summer job for college students.
TL;DR: My boss is an idiot and we haven’t gotten paid for a month of work because he forgot to.
