Was this audition really legal?

I applied for a lot of jobs since I’ve been out of work due to medical reasons. I really need the cash as I’m poor AF. I got a call back to a job to be a general manager at a skate shop. I did well on the first interview then they s asked if I wanted to do the second part of the interview stage which was an “audition”. He said it would be thirty minutes and the point of it was so asses my sales skills. I said yes and showed up. The “audition” was me getting a run down on the store and basically working for FREE for thirty minutes. I got carried away and when I realized it an hour had past. I’m in US/CA if that makes sense.
