One of the ways that corporations exert control is by keeping salary secret. They also like to wait until the last minute to reveal the salary offer so that you have already decided you want the job and are primed to settle for less. I am happy in my current work and I am not looking for a new job. But I get contacted by recruiters via email all of the time. I used to just ignore them. Now instead I reply to each and every recruiter asking what the salary is. They have no idea if I am interested in the job or not. You don't have to negotiate, just ask for the salary. When they refuse or demure (which they almost always will) you can respond by saying you are only interested in offers with an attached salary before you talk to anyone. If enough people start doing the same thing, we might be able to push back on this practice that often disproportionately affects women, minorities and any individual starting their career. It takes about 30 seconds, but will force the recruiter to contact the employer.

TL;DR: Always respond to job recruiting emails with a request for salary even if you have no interest/intent on applying for the job.
