California – New job refuses to pay for training.

Long story short, my girlfriend applied for a waitress job at a new restaurant in town. They told her to come back the next day at 9AM. She worked until 12PM and was given a log in around that time. Manager told her to clock in and she worked until around 1:15ish. She was informed later that the first 3 hours of her “training” would not be paid since she doesn’t have experience, which is bs. She was asked to make drinks, greet guests and carry out random tasks throughout the first 3 hours. She then asked another girl who had been there longer and she said she was getting paid for her “training.” She does have experience working at a few coffee shops and restaurants back in college. Not sure what kind of training you need on top of that. I am well aware this is illegal, at least…

I am well aware this is illegal, at least in Cali. I told her to ask the manager politely to pay for her “training” since they required her to physically be there. We’re planning to report them to the board of labor if she still doesn’t get paid for those hours at her pay period. She had already applied for other places as this incident alone is enough of a red-flag.

What else can we do?
