Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I feel the need to share because (like many here) I’ve been screwed over and treated like an idiot constantly throughout my career and I finally said “Fuck this shit” and ended up way better off. I’m never letting someone hold their money over me like that again. I know it’s bragging, but I really needed a win!
Tl;dr: I quit my job doing admin stuff 4.5 months ago due to my emotionally manipulative bully boss. I gave notice, but left before the biggest project of the year (good luck with that, y’all). Now I’ve had a new, fully remote job for 3 months that makes so much more money that I actually just got a month and a half of vacation and already made up the lost income.
Took a temp job about a year ago after lengthy unemployment, seemed pretty good — department offered me a permanent position doing something different.
Constant compliments about how smart and good I am, and how essential I am to the team. Wow, no one like you has ever been in this position before.
Even so, took several months to actually make me permanent. Ok, no worries, HR is hard. Position is with the state, so red tape is also a factor.
Offer comes in: $4,000/year less than last person even though I have more responsibilities. hiring manager feigns ignorance, but gets offer changed.
New boss starts telling me I’m inefficient, uncoachable, only interested in fun projects, etc. Constantly talks about my coworkers behind their backs, presumably gives me the same treatment. In our last meeting before I become permanent, she makes me cry.
I should have quit then, no? Well, I didn’t. I have work health insurance then, which is good because my mental health is getting worse and worse. I up my antidepressants. I find out that my position is actually a combination of two previously full time positions.
The department can’t run without me — that much is true. I work from home three days a week so I start playing BOTW on switch for several hours a day instead of working hard like I used to. Fuck them.
Big Boss decides new employees should all work from the office 5 days per week. Meanwhile, my direct boss is constantly criticizing every little thing I do. I was going to try to stay through one last big project but fuck that. I put in notice.
“Are you sure this is the right decision 🥺?”
Yes. Also, I reported all of you to HR. Also also, I stole like 30 pens on my last day.
Two weeks after my last day, I get an interview for a fully remote job doing something I love and am good at. I get the job, and the salary is an eye-popping 150% of my previous (admittedly shitty) salary. More importantly, my boss is incredible and every member of my team has taken time to mentor me.
I look up my previous colleagues’ salaries on the public database: they all got raises after I left and hired a new temp to do my job, but I now make way more than most of them and never have to set foot in that shitty toxic office ever again.🥇
