Is “open office” still a thing?

My previous two places of employment had “open offices”: dozens of workers at desks with no walls between them. I thought it sucked – noisy and intrusive. When I first went to my new office about a year and a half ago, I was delighted to find cubicles. Now I've learned that open office is the plan here, too. Anybody else work in an open office? Anyone have an employer planning to go that way? Apart from headphones, how can I mitigate the problems?
