So, I’ve been in the service industry most of my adult life. Taken a lot of abuse, been ripped off by many of my employers. I never felt like there was much I could do about it. When I started working in restaurants, there was no antiwork, and asking too many questions was a great way to wind up unemployed. For reference, I started working in a kitchen in 1995, and was paid $4.75/hr. Things got better with time, but looking back, I was exploited with a capital E. Since finding this sub, I’ve come to realize just how badly I let myself be treated. One thing stands out though. About 12 years ago I took a job for an old “friend” who offered to pay me under the table. Until spring came around…and he slapped me with a 1099. I wasn’t the only one he did this to. We were scheduled employees, there are no freelancers in a kitchen. It’s been so long now, I already got screwed on my return that year. But is there any way to make him pay his share of those taxes? He clearly got one over on the IRS. I don’t know if there’s some statute of limitations on this, but I’m willing to bet he didn’t stop the shady stuff with me. Is there anyone I can tip off to what he did, or should I just let this one go too? Happened in Maryland if that matters. Also, this isn’t pure revenge. I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to some other dude who’s down on his luck and thinks he can’t do any better. Lots of people that work in kitchens don’t have a lot of opportunities, so they bend over when they have to choose between a proper fucking and no roof over their head.
